Merlot - soft and smooth

Merlot is one of the most grown red wine varieties worldwide and has now entered the top ten red wine varieties of Germany.

It has been cultivated since the 18th century in France yet has only been grown in Germany since 1997. There are currently 700 hectares (2018) planted with Merlot in Germany, mostly in the Pfalz and in Rheinhessen.

Merlot ripens relatively early with good must weight. The rather dark wines are reminiscent of plums and taste soft and smooth, making them accessible to many wine lovers. Wines can be vinified as a single grape variety or as a cuvée with other red varieties and aged in barriques. A simple Merlot can be enjoyed without any culinary accompaniment or with lighter dishes. The barrique wines pair better with strong dishes.
