Syrah / Shiraz

Syrah is a natural cross between the very old varieties Mondeuse Blanche and Dureza. It probably comes from the Rhone Valley in France and is grown worldwide, mostly in France with 63,958 hectares (2015), followed by Australia and Spain. Around 80 hectares (2018) are planted with this vine in Germany - and the trend is rising.

Syrah is very sensitive to cold and wet in the flowering period. For full ripeness of the grapes, The vines need a lot of direct sunlight to ripen fully, however, too much sun and over-ripeness quickly lead to a loss of quality.

The distinctive currant aroma is typical of Syrah. There are also nuances of plum, violet and blackberry. The red wines are deep dark in color and have both fruity and spicy notes. Thanks to the strong tannins, they have enormous aging potential. Syrah wines go very well with strong meat dishes such as game or beef.
